Krasl Art Center in downtown St. Joseph, Michigan collects and publicly displays contemporary sculpture. On our campus and throughout the community, indoors and out, you can engage with dynamic artworks by Dale Chihuly, Richard Hunt, George Rickey, and many more artists – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Head to Lake Bluff Park on the second weekend of July for the Krasl Art Fair on the Bluff presented by 1st Source Bank Wealth Advisory Services and Krasl Art Center! 2026 dates are Saturday, July 11 from 9 AM – 6 PM, and Sunday, July 12 from 10 AM – 5 PM.

Opening in the Project Space, Krasl Art Center presents a new installation by Bella Kiser, expanding her exploration of soft architecture. Working within fiber, sculpture, installation, performance, and sound, Kiser builds environments that consider how ideas of home and identity are shaped through experience and space.

A balikbayan box is a care package sent home to the Philippines by Filipinos living abroad. For Kiser, these boxes held everything from work clothes and yellowing books to art supplies, rice, bibles, and whatever her family might want or need. In this exhibition, the box becomes a way of thinking about what we inherit from our loved ones and what we carry forward.

The installation centers on four photographs documenting the last physical skill Kiser learned from her Lola passed away: how to gut, descale, and cook a whole fish. Alongside fiber, sound, and interactive sculpture, “Balikbayan Box” creates a space where family histories, cultural connection, loss, and care come together.

Visitors are invited to take their shoes off, lie on the large balikbayan box, listen to soundscape, and interact with smaller boxes throughout the installation.

Join us for the Preview Party on Friday, August 14, from 6 – 8 PM and on Saturday, August 15, from 12 – 1 PM for an artist talk at Krasl with Bella Kiser.
