Krasl Art Center and the Coastline Children’s Film Festival (CCFF) have combined forces once again for the return of Flick-or-Treat.

Head to KAC in St. Joseph on October 29 to decorate your own pumpkin to display at KAC and then enjoy 10 projected silent films with a live piano accompaniment from Dr. Larry Shanker on KAC’s grounds. Pull up a blanket, enjoy popcorn, coffee or hot cocoa from Red Arrow Roasters, and experience 10 classic films projected on Krasl Art Center’s building. A $2 suggested donation supports CCFF and KAC collaborations.

CALLING ALL PUMPKIN ARTISTS!

Be a part of the event and showcase YOUR carved or decorated pumpkin to a Community Pumpkin Walk on view all weekend. Simply come by KAC from 7–8 PM and decorate to your heart’s content! The display will be illuminated evenings through October 31.

Get creative during Winter Break with Krasl Art Center’s youth camps designed for students ages 5–8 and 9–12. Camps are $45 ($35 for KAC Members) and run December 27–30, register by December 20 and learn about scholarship opportunities at krasl.org/education/youth/camps/

Learn a new art form, enhance your resiliency skills, or create a new date night with an art class at Krasl Art Center.

Registration opens August 9 and closes September 6*, 2021.

Classes begin the week of September 13.

The creative process is messy and unpredictable, and that’s what KAC’s teaching artists love about it! Instead of providing a step-by-step formula that leads to a predetermined outcome, instructors provide guidance and structured exploration through the elements and principles of art.

Meeting September 13 – November 5, these 4 and 8-week Adult/Teen courses connect students in and beyond the classroom by engaging with art history and contemporary topics. Enrolled students will have the opportunity to sign up for 4-week extension classes running November 15 – December 10, 2021.

There are no classes November 22–28.

Explore nature and the arts at Krasl Art Center (KAC)! Multiple studios are ready to welcome students 13+ back for in person art classes after a year-long hiatus. Whether you are an established artist looking for a new skill, or interested in forming a new hobby, KAC offers classes for students at multiple skill levels and at varying lengths.

Indoor studio classes will have a 4-student cap, and new outdoor classes a 6-student cap, all created with student safety in mind.

The new outdoor studio is part of KAC’s East Garden, dedicated in memory of Lupe Hopp and underwritten by Horizon Bank. The site is dedicated to interactive sculpture. This year, KAC combined the creativity and interaction of East Garden artist installations with the pragmatic need for an outdoor summer studio. Prismatic Hope, by local artist Andy Sawyer, is the colorful result. Sawyer’s design includes artist work stations for six (6) artists and one (1) instructor – all colorfully delineated, spaced and shielded to allow for safe artmaking.

Krasl Art Center is offering six (6) in-person art camps this spring Brask. Camps are inspired by the artworks of Renee Robbins and Nikki Renee Anderson, on view in KAC galleries during ‘Boom Bloom’ April 3 – June 6, 2021. The exhibition includes bold abstract paintings and sculptures that reference a variety of subjects, including flowers, the body, cellular biology and outer space.

Camps are available for students ages 5 – 7, and 8 – 12 and cost $45 per student ($35 for KAC members). All camps are in-person, registration and required forms are available at krasl.org/education/youth/camps.

Flowers don’t have to be tiny, delicate, and pretty. They can also be big, bold, and powerful! Keith Stevens will teach campers to use scale, bold colors, and dynamic shapes to highlight the energy and excitement of flowers and other common plants.

SB4: Space Junk Sculptures

8 – 12 YRS

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 7, 1 – 4 PM

Use recycled materials to create robots, spaceships, rovers, and satellites that will orbit the Krasl skies with instructor Keith Stevens! Finished sculptures will be spray painted silver and hung in KAC windows for the remainder of Spring Break week.

SB5: Cellular Mandalas

5-7 YRS

THURSDAY, APRIL 8, 9 AM-12 PM

A mandala is a geometric form that begins with one central point and expands to infinite! See how gallery artist Renee Robbins has used this form in her art to represent micro and macro growth, and then make your own paintings using the same idea with instructor Sherrie Styx.

SB6: Biomorphic Clay Bodies (IN-PERSON)

8-12 YRS

THURSDAY, APRIL 8, 1-4 PM

Clay is the perfect medium to create biomorphic forms that resemble or suggest living organisms! View the sculptures of Nikki Renee Anderson and make your own sculptures that appear to be in the process of growing, breathing, or changing shape before your eyes with artist Dani Davis.

This Family Day is inspired by the Coastline Children’s Film Festival’s feature film Jackie & Oopjen. Watch the film Friday, March 12 at 6 PM and then tune into Virtual Family Day with Miss Dani Saturday, March 13 at 11 AM all from the comfort of your home! Create a snowflake lace collar and ribbon bow sash to perfectly match Oopjen, co-star of the film, from Rembrandt’s famous painting Portrait of Oopjen Coppit.

ABOUT THE FILM:

Jackie & Oopjen 2021 Dutch/UK 90 min subtitles Ages 9 and up

12-year-old Jackie has made Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum, where her mom works, her second home. While wandering around after hours, Oopjen from Rembrandt’s famous painting suddenly comes to life! It seems she is looking for her long-lost sister. Jackie is used to solving other people’s problems and decides to take Oopjen home, so they can go look for her sister. For the woman from the Golden Age, this modern world, its customs and appliances are a great adventure. And Jackie, who doesn’t really have any friends at school, finally gains a true BFF!

KAC is excited to continue offering free & fun art activities for families. All events are online and by registration only. Family Day Art Fundles will be available for pick-up the weekend before the event: Friday, March, 5th – Monday, March 8th & Friday, March 12th.
