SUMMARY:Intervals of Mark and Matter & Balikbayan Box Preview Party
DESCRIPTION:Opening this August\, Intervals of Mark and Matter brings together the work of KC Crow Maddux\, Karen Dana Cohen\, Evan Mazellan\, Amelia Mendelsohn\, Ivan Montoya\, Thương Hoài Trần\, and Antonio Scott Nichols. These artists approach painting as a site of translation where material\, image\, and lived experience converge. Drawing from personal and cultural narratives\, the artists engage themes such as family\, mythology\, migration\, and identity to construct works that feel both intimate and expansive. Across the exhibition\, painting emerges as a living and expansive practice: one that does not simply depict\, but questions\, experiments\, and reaches outward.\n\nOpening in the Project Space\, Krasl Art Center presents a new installation by Bella Kiser\, expanding her exploration of soft architecture. Working within fiber\, sculpture\, installation\, performance\, and sound\, Kiser builds environments that consider how ideas of home and identity are shaped through experience and space.\n\nJoin us for the Preview Party on Friday\, August 14\, from 6–8 PM.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Bella Kiser
DESCRIPTION:Opening August 15 in Project Space\, “BALIKBAYAN Box” by Bella Kiser is an intimate installation about family and the things we carry with us across distance. \nA balikbayan box is a care package sent home to the Philippines by Filipinos living abroad. For Kiser\, these boxes held everything from work clothes and yellowing books to art supplies\, rice\, bibles\, and whatever her family might want or need. In this exhibition\, the box becomes a way of thinking about what we inherit from our loved ones and what we carry forward. \nThe installation centers on four photographs documenting the last physical skill Kiser learned from her Lola passed away: how to gut\, descale\, and cook a whole fish. Alongside fiber\, sound\, and interactive sculpture\, “Balikbayan Box” creates a space where family histories\, cultural connection\, loss\, and care come together. \nVisitors are invited to take their shoes off\, lie on the large balikbayan box\, listen to soundscape\, and interact with smaller boxes throughout the installation. \nJoin us on Saturday\, August 15\, from 12 – 1 PM for an artist talk at Krasl with Bella Kiser.

SUMMARY:PechaKucha Vol. 37 - Outside at The Livery
DESCRIPTION:Members of the community\, friends\, families\, and all those in-between are all cordially invited to attend the PURCHASE YOUR TICKETS HERE: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pechakucha-sjbh-volume-37-the-livery-tickets-1999269757664?fbclid=IwY2xjawUVH3NwZG9mAWV4dG4DYWVtAjEwAHNydGMGYXBwX2lkEDIyMjAzOTE3ODgyMDA4OTIAAR48jjURHNYOurywwai85hKjxGSyB_FPPoW68epDMmOopGrDb10Gd1L8N7-s0w_aem_mTakav9quHl3SPlqq3xflQ\n\n\n\nPechaKucha 20×20 St. Joseph/Benton Harbor Volume 37 Event. The ticketed event takes place outside at The Livery on Friday\, September 18\, 2026\, from 8:30 – 10:30 PM. Doors open at 7:30 PM. PechaKucha’s – meaning “chit chat” in Japanese – presentation format shows 20 images\, each for 20 seconds. In other words\, presenters get 400 seconds to tell their story\, with visuals guiding the way.\nPechaKucha St. Joseph/Benton Harbor has been bringing local creatives to center-stage for 10 years in 2025\, and Volume 37 brings more creative stories! This is a special\, ticketed event- make sure to get your tickets in advance so you don’t miss out!\nThis creative outlet began as nighttime get-togethers in Tokyo in 2003 by two renowned architects. Since then\, three million people have attended PechaKucha events worldwide. Inspired by their desire to “talk less\, show more\,” Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham of Tokyo’s Klein-Dytham Architecture (KDA) created PechaKucha in February 2003 as a way to attract people to their experimental event space in Roppongi\, Japan\, and to enable young designers to meet\, show their work\, and exchange ideas in 6 minutes and 40 seconds.\nIn 2003\, Tokyo began hosting PK Nights\, followed over the years by hundreds of other cities across the globe. As of April 2019\, PechaKucha nights had been held in more than 1\,142 cities worldwide and attended by more than 3 million people. It’s no surprise PechaKucha has been described at the worlds biggest physical social network! The key to the success is the simple format where presenters only get 20 images shown for 20 seconds each — giving anyone a chance to present their recent project or passion.\nMany cities often lack spaces where creative people can share their work\, so PechaKucha is about exposing the hidden creativity in a city. PechaKucha nights are organized by local passionate and enthusiastic people with backgrounds in many creative fields.Follow PechaKucha SJ/BH on Facebook as we reveal the lineup for volume 37! https://www.facebook.com/pechakuchasjbh\nThe event is planned for outside in the beer garden area of The Livery. Rain location is inside the building of The Livery.Beer and pizza will be available for sale. CASH ONLY!Limited chairs available. PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN CHAIRS!

SUMMARY:Family Day in the Galleries
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the galleries for a family-friendly collage activity inspired by Bella Kiser’s Balikbayan Box. \nArtist Bella Kiser’s mother\, Magdalena Arguelles\, will join us virtually to share a collage activity inspired by the balikbayan box\, a large cardboard box traditionally used to send gifts\, goods\, and everyday necessities to family in the Philippines. Participants will use cardboard box cutouts\, store flyers\, and other materials to imagine their own balikbayan box. \nWhat would you send to someone you love? What objects\, foods\, or small comforts would you pack to make a place far away feel a little closer? Come make a collage\, spend time with Balikbayan Box\, and think about the ways objects can carry care\, memory\, and connection across distance.

SUMMARY:Balikbayan Box: Conversation + Sound Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join artist Bella Kiser and her brother\, soundscape composer Kenton Kiser\, for an afternoon exploring Balikbayan Box\, memory\, family\, and sound. \n12–1 PM | Artist Conversation\nBella Kiser and Kenton Kiser will be in conversation with Associate Curator Meli Bandera about Balikbayan Box and the relationships between family\, migration\, memory\, and place that shape the exhibition. Together\, they will discuss the making of the project and Kenton’s soundscape\, which forms an audio component of the installation. \nBalikbayan Box takes its name from the large cardboard boxes used to send goods and gifts to family in the Philippines. The exhibition considers what happens when objects move between places and generations\, carrying stories of family\, distance\, belonging\, and care along with them. The conversation will also explore the role of sound in the exhibition and how it can evoke memory\, create a sense of place\, and connect us to people and places that may be far away. \n  \n1–2 PM | Sound Walk + Workshop with Kenton Kiser\n$10 | Limited to 30 participants \nFollowing the conversation\, join soundscape composer Kenton Kiser for a hands-on sound workshop. Participants will take a five-minute sound walk in the area surrounding Krasl Art Center\, recording the sounds they encounter along the way. After the walk\, participants will share what they recorded and collectively map their routes and the sounds they discovered for others to explore. \nSound can be a material just like paint\, fabric\, or clay. By slowing down and listening closely\, ordinary sounds can become a way of noticing a place\, documenting a moment\, or triggering a memory. This workshop offers a chance to experiment with sound as part of an art-making practice and to consider how listening can change the way we experience our surroundings. \nNo prior experience with sound or recording is necessary. Bring a phone or recording device if you have one.
