SUMMARY:In the Gallery - Lines with Power and Purpose: Editorial Cartoons
DESCRIPTION:In an age of memes\, satire and political polarization\, Lines with Power and Purpose: Editorial Cartoons illustrates historical battles amid politics and popular opinion. Included in this exhibition are six Pulitzer Prize winners for editorial cartooning\, among others. The collection has been culled from the Melton Gallery at the University of Central Oklahoma\, which has housed the cartoons for more than three decades. \nIt represents a bygone era when printed matter was the status quo and cartoonists were part of the newsroom staff. Featuring fifty-one original editorial cartoons from metropolitan newspapers in the United States\, the exhibition spans across two world wars and the great depression. It illustrates discontent with the US government\, presidential elections\, and daily work-related battles with dualistic intentions: to provide welcomed comic relief as well as shape opinion. \nFree & Open to the Public. A Program of ExhibitsUSA\, a national division of Mid-America Arts Alliance and The National Endowment for the Arts \n\nMark your Calendar! \nOPENING NIGHT FRIDAY\, JANUARY 31\, 5:30 – 8 PM\nJoin us for art\, music\, small bites provided by Bistro on the Boulevard\, and a cash bar featuring Lake Michigan Vintners and The Livery microbrewery. \nCOFFEE WITH THE CURATOR WEDNESDAY\, FEBRUARY 5\, 12 PM\nWalk through the galleries and learn about the art on view with KAC Deputy Director\, Tami Miller

SUMMARY:In the Galleries: Dex R. Jones: Storied Portraits
DESCRIPTION:Influenced by the cultural richness of his Caribbean heritage and Pan-African studies\, Dexter R. Jones unwaveringly removes the veil of self-conscious inhibition by eliminating preconceived notions of beauty. Instead\, he masterfully reveals true splendor and regality\, even amidst vulnerability. Jones relentlessly pushes the characterization of beauty not often seen. Encompassing a mixture of texture\, hues\, flesh and heavy contrast in his editorial photography\, his expertise in justly capturing women of vast shades is indicative of his strong matriarchal upbringing.  \nBorn in Brooklyn\, New York\, Jones works on artistic projects\, editorial assignments\, and creative collaborations in both photography and film. Storied Portraits is Jones’ first solo show outside of New York and features 20 images produced in large-scale\, further enhancing the vibrancy\, strength and appeal of his artwork. \nEXHIBITION PROGRAMMING \nThoughtful Thursday – Exhibition Preview with Barbara Cooper\, March 12\, 7 – 8 PM\nCLOSING PARTY – DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED SOON

SUMMARY:CANCELED - Coastline Children's Film Festival - Everybody Knows Elizabeth Murray
DESCRIPTION:FREE & OPEN TO THE PUBLIC \n2016 USA 60 min Ages 12 and up \nAn intimate portrait of the groundbreaking artist Elizabeth Murray the film explores the relationship between Murray’s family life and career\, and reconsiders her place in contemporary art history. Verité footage\, home videos and excerpts from her journals\, voiced by Meryl Streep\, tell of Murray’s internal struggles and incredible ambition. Exclusive interviews with art world luminaries provide the historical backdrop for the New York art scene. Elizabeth Murray moved to New York City in 1967. In 2005\, almost forty years later\, Murray was the fifth woman to be celebrated with a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Everybody Knows… Elizabeth Murray traces Murray’s life\, from years as a struggling single mother to having a bustling\, growing family and thriving career. From her early 1960’s “funk-inflected pop” to her painterly minimalism in the 70’s\, and on to her dynamic fractured canvases of the 1990s and 2000s\, Murray worked without hesitation through – and often in spite of – market trends\, historical movements and her failing health. Murray’s paintings defy efforts at categorization. She broke convention\, and made an indelible imprint on contemporary art. This film chronicles her remarkable journey from an impoverished childhood to artistic maverick\, before she lost her life to cancer in 2007. Everybody Knows… Elizabeth Murray cements Murray’s legacy as one of the great painters of our time. \n#ccff #filmfestival #krasl

SUMMARY:CANCELED - Coastline Children's Film Festival Finale Part 1 - One Week Screening
DESCRIPTION:FREE & OPEN TO THE PUBLIC \n1920 USA. 25 min. Ages 6 and up\nFeaturing Dr. Larry Schanker on piano\nScreens just before GO WEST \nOne Week was the first Buster Keaton-directed film to be released to the public (The High Sign was made earlier but shelved for several months). Based on a now-obscure educational short called Home Made\, it involves a build-it-yourself house given to Keaton and his new bride (Sybil Seely). Unbeknownst to the couple\, the wife’s disgruntled former suitor has changed the numbers on the boxes containing the building materials. Keaton does make the house in one week\, as the instructions have promised\, but what a house! Right off the bat\, this early Keaton film shows his penchant for big props (the cockeyed house\, a passing train). The brilliance of Buster Keaton is embodied in this short silent film. \n#ccff #filmfestival #krasl #southwestmichigan

After an abortive attempt to get by in the city\, he follows Horace Greeley’s advice to “Go West\, young man!” As a result\, Friendless winds up on a cattle ranch and is about the most unlikely cowboy imaginable (in fact\, he never does trade in his porkpie hat for a ten-gallon). Various bits of comic business abound; standouts include the milking scene and a card game in which Friendless accuses a player of cheating. Friendless finds true love — not with the rancher’s daughter but with Brown Eyes\, a cow who seems nearly as out of place in the herd as Friendless does on the ranch. Cow and boy become devoted\, but Brown Eyes is headed for the slaughterhouse. Friendless resolves to rescue her\, sneaking on the train that’s taking her and thousands of other cattle to the Los Angeles station. The herd escapes from the cattle cars at the destination and runs amok through downtown L.A.; it is then up to Friendless to round them up. With the help of a costume shop\, Friendless saves the day…and his cow. Go West is Keaton’s most heartfelt film\, and certainly one of his most underrated. \n#ccff #filmfestival #krasl #southwestmichigan

SUMMARY:PechaKucha Volume 20: Inspire the World
DESCRIPTION:What a world we live in. This change in life has been so quick and dramatic but one thing is for sure – we all still want to come together and inspire one another. While we may not be able to gather in person\, there are still so many stories about creativity and inspiration happening worth sharing – now more than ever. For the past 5 years\, PechaKucha St. Joseph/Benton Harbor (PKSJBH) has brought 19 evenings filled with such creative stories\, and the 20th installment promises to do just the same.\n\nAs part of the new INSPIRE the World initiative from PechaKucha (PK) Headquarters in Tokyo\, tune in to PechaKucha St. Joseph/Benton Harbor’s YouTube Event for a free and live online event Thursday\, May 14 at 7 PM. Catch familiar faces in the lineup of nine presenters from around the nation and meet PK founder Mark Dytham during this new and inspiring virtual event:\n\n\nMark Dytham\, PechaKucha Founder\, Tokyo\, Japan.\nLana DeFrancesco\, PechaKucha Organizer\, St. Joseph\, MI\nRonnika “RJ” Williams\, PechaKucha Organizer\, Boys and Girls Club\, Benton Harbor\, MI\nMatthew Bizoe\, PechaKucha Organizer\, Krasl Art Center\, Bridgman\, MI\nEmily McKenna\, Krasl Art Center\, Benton Harbor\, MI\nSara Katanko\, PechaKucha Organizer\, Wightman\, Benton Harbor\, MI\nChris Gregory\, (former) PechaKucha Organizer\, Pepsi Designer\, New York\, NY\nJude Pullen\, Technologist & Physical Prototyping Expert\, London\, UK\nKelly McElroy\, Civil Engineer at Cook Nuclear Plant\, St. Joseph\, MI\n\n\nInterested in supporting PechaKucha St. Joseph / Benton Harbor? Sign up to present at a future event\, or browse past events at https://www.pechakucha.com/cities/st-joseph\n\nDonations can be made on the organization’s Eventbrite page.\n\nPechaKucha ‘INSPIRE The World’ LIVE events showcase positive\, creative and inspiring stories. In times of crisis\, the PK global network has mobilized to curate stories of how people\, who are creatively coping through the COVID-19 pandemic\, can INSPIRE the World. These presentations are curated to talk about not only the pandemic\, but also to inspire with stories unrelated to our current situation.\n\nPechaKucha’s – meaning “chit chat” in Japanese – presentation format shows 20 images\, each for 20 seconds. In other words\, presenters get 400 seconds to tell their story\, with visuals guiding the way. Whether you have been to all 19 volumes or this is your first\, this fun evening spent hearing from local artists and community members will bring inspirational stories to your home.\n\nThis creative outlet began as nighttime get-togethers in Tokyo in 2003 by two renowned architects. Since then\, three million people have attended PechaKucha events worldwide. Inspired by their desire to “talk less\, show more\,” Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham of Tokyo’s Klein-Dytham Architecture (KDa) created PechaKucha in February 2003 as a way to attract people to their experimental event space in Roppongi\, Japan\, and to enable young designers to meet\, show their work\, and exchange ideas in 6 minutes and 40 seconds.\n\nIn 2004\, cities in Europe began hosting PK Nights\, followed over the years by hundreds of others across the globe. As of April 2019\, PechaKucha nights had been held in more than 1\,142 cities worldwide and attended by more than 3 million people. The key to the success is the simple format where presenters only get 20 images shown for 20 seconds each — giving anyone a chance to present their recent project or passion.\n\nIt’s no surprise PechaKucha has been described at the world’s biggest physical social network! When we now find ourselves lacking physical spaces where creative people can share their work\, PechaKucha’s network is able to expose the hidden creativity across the world. PechaKucha nights are organized by local\, passionate\, and enthusiastic people with backgrounds in many creative fields – hear their stories on May 14!\n\nWightman\, Krasl Art Center\, and individual volunteers collaborate to bring this engaging event to the community.
