SUMMARY:Arte Cubano
DESCRIPTION:Building on recent events\, this timely exhibition reflects more than twenty-five Cuban artists’ ruminations on the quotidian\, social\, and political realities of the island and the contemporary world. The island geography and political intensity of Cuba inform the work in a way that is immediately identifiable\, often concealing coded\, even subversive\, ideas while simultaneously celebrating the richness of Cuba’s cultural identity. Peeling away the layers of Cuban art often reveals a story of struggle caused by the US embargo and its economic and political consequences\, the social upheaval that a true revolution produces. \nSpanning several generations\, these contemporary Cuban artists come from an unusual place: a country embargoed by our own because of its socialist revolution. All of the artists in this collection grew up in socialist Cuba\, and many graduated from the prestigious Instituto Superior de Arte\, built at the beginning of the revolution\, Havana’s equally excellent San Alejandro Art Academy or the Escuela Nacional de Arte. Others graduated from local art schools. Despite their disparate backgrounds\, aesthetic sensibilities\, subject matter\, materials\, and styles\, there is something uniquely Cuban about the art in this collection. \nMid-America Arts Allliance co-organized Arte Cubano with the Center for Cuban Studies (NYC) to synthesize two extraordinary private collections held by Kathy and Marc LeBaron and Karen and Robert Duncan. This exhibition could not have been made possible without their collecting vision and loan generosity. The Center for Cuban Studies opened in 1972 and was organized by a group of scholars\, writers\, artists\, and other professionals\, in response to the effects of US policy toward Cuba. \nA Program of ExhibitsUSA\, a national division of Mid-America Arts Alliance and The National Endowment for the Arts. \nExhibition Sponsor: \nPREVIEW PARTY\nFRIDAY\, NOVEMBER 30\n5:30 PM – 8 PM \nPROFESSOR SILVIA PREDRAZA LECTURE – 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM \nSilvia Pedraza\, Professor of Sociology and American Culture at the University of Michigan\, will speak on generational politics\, tracing shifts and differences in the attitudes and experiences of Cuban islanders and those who left. Meet in the KAC Library. \nSALSA DANCE PARTY – 6:30 PM – 8 PM \nSalsa was born in Cuba\, built on Afro-Cuban rhythms and earlier dance forms like són. Today\, salsa is all over the globe\, practiced with styles as unique as the places it’s found in. Join South Bend Latin Dance for a lively demonstration at 6:30 PM\, followed by a mini dance lesson. No partner\, experience\, or coordination required! Practice your new moves throughout the remainder of the party! Small bites and cash bar available. \nSouth Bend Latin Dance is based in South Bend and serves a larger regional community.  They honor salsa and Latin dance in all its forms and welcome dancers of all backgrounds and abilities \nCOFFEE WITH THE CURATOR\nMONDAY\, DECEMBER 3 \n9 AM\nJoin KAC Deputy Director & Curator\, Tami Miller\, for an informative tour in the galleries. Learn about the selected artworks\, the artists who made them\, and how their work informs our understandings of Cuba today. \nCover Image: Frank Martinez\, Blanco y Negro\, 2008\, mixed media\n  \nIN THE artlab: ALLISON SVOBODA \nEXTENDED THROUGH FEBRUARY 3\nFREE & OPEN TO THE PUBLIC\n \nMandala\, Allison Svoboda\, 2012.\nIn this extended exhibition\, Allison Svoboda’s ethereal collaged paper mandalas remain on view through February 3. If you have not seen the show already\, be sure to visit. Svoboda uses ink paintings and fine papers to build delicately layered flower-like shapes that float off the gallery walls.

Drawing on photographs from over fifty photographers\, these personal and often poetic post-war views unveil not only another side to the devastating effects of war\, but also tell the stories of people coming together to rebuild and heal. Aftermath: War is Only Half the Story illumines and defines our humanity while giving visibility to those coping with the lingering ramifications of conflict. \nThe exhibition is a ten-year retrospective of the work of the groundbreaking documentary photography program The Aftermath Project. Founded to help change the way the media covers conflict – and to educate the public about the true cost of war and the real price of peace – The Aftermath Project has discovered some of the most groundbreaking photojournalists in the world – as well as internationally acclaimed photographers Stanley Greene\, Nina Berman\, Davide Monteleone\, Justyna Mielnikiewicz\, and Jim Goldberg\, among many others – working on post-conflict themes. \nThe end of war does not mean peace. It is simply the end of war\, the end of death and destruction. Every story of war includes a chapter that almost always goes untold – the story of the aftermath\, which day by day becomes the prologue of the future.  Sara Terry (Founder of The Aftermath Project) \nAftermath: War Is Only Half the Story originated by The Aftermath Project\, Los Angeles\, and toured by Curatorial Assistance Traveling Exhibitions\, Pasadena\, California. \nAFTERMATH OPENING PARTY  \nFRIDAY\, FEBRUARY 8 \n6 – 8 PM \nFREE & OPEN TO THE PUBLIC \nCelebrate the opening of this new exhibition in the Krasl Art Center galleries and meet Aftermath: War is Only Half the Story curator\, Sara Terry. \nThe Collective of Benton Harbor will walk guests through a calming breath and yoga sequence throughout the evening\, and be able to answer questions on how breath control can aid in your personal journey with conflict. \nSmall bites from Bistro on the Boulevard and a cash bar available. \nPANEL DISCUSSION HOSTED BY AFTERMATH CURATOR\, SARA TERRY \nSATURDAY\, FEBRUARY 9 \n10 AM – 12 PM \nFREE & OPEN TO THE PUBLIC \nSave the date!  Join Aftermath: War is Only Half the Story curator\, Sara Terry\, who will lead an engaging panel discussion with community members on the themes covered in this exhibition. SUMMARY:Art Fair Jury Day
DESCRIPTION:February 27\, 2019 at Lake Michigan College\,  9 AM – 5 PM \nFree & Open to the Public \nWatch as the jurors – a panel of professional artists and art experts – select the artists for the 2019 show.  Jurors review the more than 900 artists who submit their work in hopes of being invited to be a 2019 Krasl Art Fair on the Bluff artist. \nNever been to a Jury Day?  This is how it works: \nFormat: 5 jurors view 5 slides on projection screens at a time.  Four of the slides represent the applying artist’s work\, and one is a picture of their booth.  Volunteers read the artist’s statement and description\, the jurors’ score and the next artist is displayed.  All work is anonymous. Only jurors may ask questions. \nThe audience is free to come and go. Jury introductions and rules of the jury begin promptly at 9AM. Jurors take a one hour break close to noon. Jurors review artists by category (there are 11 this year.)  An artist must be “juried in” to participate in the KAF.   Note: This is not an opportunity for artists and the public to interact with the jury. \n

DESCRIPTION:TUESDAY\, MARCH 12\, 6:30 PM  \nThe Unseen\n1997 Czech Republic\, 53 min\nwith English subtitles\nAges 10 and up\n  \nPeople imagine\, that the blind live in darkness and know nothing about the things around them. But they have a concrete image of everything.“ says photographer Daniela Horníčková\, who led blind children from the Prague Jaroslav Ježek School to capture their surroundings on still cameras. The children took pictures at school\, on field trips\, at home or the dormitory mostly focusing on things they knew by touch. In 1995\, director Miroslav Janek entered the project and shot a documentary stimulating comprehension of the issues and uniqueness of the creative process. \n\nThe Krasl Art Center is thrilled to be a venue for the 2019 Coastline Children’s Film Festival!  Join us for screenings throughout this two week festival\, including the premiere screenings and the grand finale with live music by Dr. Larry Schanker!  Donations are appreciated. SUMMARY:COASTLINE CHILDREN’S FILM FESTIVAL - JEANNETTE\, THE CHILDHOOD JOAN OF ARC
DESCRIPTION:THURSDAY\, MARCH 14 at THE BENTON HARBOR PUBLIC LIBRARY\, 213 E WALL ST\, 6:30 PM  \nJEANNETTE\, the Childhood of Joan of Arc\nDirected by Bruno Dumont\, France\, Live Action 2017\n105 min\, in French with English subtitles\, Ages 12 and up\nFree/$1 suggested donation \nFrench master Bruno Dumont (Hadewijch) recreates the adolescence of the Maid of Orleans as a radical\, electro-metal musical. The battles\, trial\, and martyrdom of Joan of Arc have been chronicled by such cinema masters as Cecil B. DeMille\, Carl Theodor Dreyer\, Robert Bresson\, Otto Preminger\, and Jacques Rivette — but seldom has the crucial period of Joan’s preadolescent formation been depicted on screen. With his tenth feature\, Bruno Dumont radically delves into Joan’s childhood with a category-defying period-cum-techno-head-banging musical\, derived from two works by French writer Charles Péguy. Set in 1425 France\, with the Hundred Years’ War raging off-screen\, the film begins with eight-year-old Jeannette tending fluffy sheep in the village of Domrémy. She confides her mystical calling to her friend Hauviette\, and although dissuaded by Madame Gervaise (hilariously embodied by a pair of identical twin nuns)\, Jeannette is ultimately buoyed by her faith and sets out to fulfill her destiny. \nExquisitely shot in a palette of royal blues\, heather greens\, and sand by Guillaume Deffontaines\, Jeannette oozes elemental beauty. Dumont casts non-actors in the leading roles and makes use of live sync sound for the sung\, a cappella dialogue\, creating an intoxicating combination of naturalism\, amateurism\, and anarchic artifice that is bolstered by an electro-metal score from French multi-instrumentalist Igorrr and a majorettes-meets–mosh pit choreography with hair-wagging paroxysms. Heady\, strange\, genuinely funny\, and completely out of time\, Jeannette is one heck of contribution to the canon of “Joan films” and further proof of Dumont’s astonishing versatility and uncompromising vision. \nFrom The New York TImes—the characters don’t only sing\, they dance\, and in astonishing ways. Ms. Prudhomme twirls\, cartwheels\, stomps and headbangs\, as does Jeanne Voisin later on as the teenage Jeanne\, who’s dropped the “ette” from her name. It’s a bit funny\, but it’s also more than that. Between the music and the dance\, the temptation is to conclude that Mr. Dumont is trying to “modernize” Joan’s story\, as she becomes determined to follow her visions and create an army to save France. Given that the very act of filming is a modernizing factor\, that’s true in a sense. But his artistic aim is\, I think\, the inverse of that. “Jeannette” throws the modern back at the medieval\, making no distinction between religious ecstasy and that experienced in certain contemporary contexts of music and ritual. It’s a provocative proposition that yields a film of genuine spiritual dimension \n\nThe Krasl Art Center is thrilled to be a venue for the 2019 Coastline Children’s Film Festival!  Join us for screenings throughout this two week festival\, including the premiere screenings and the grand finale with live music by Dr. Larry Schanker!  Donations are appreciated.
